Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Ho-ho-ho, you’re doing a wonderful job! Joseph has been way-overusing that line this season. And, his legacy santa hat has gotten its fair share of use this holiday season as well. Today, we don’t have any major highlights to share, but we wanted to take some time to say…Merry Christmas!

New Holiday Traditions?

While we may not have completed any major projects, we did get the opportunity to start what may end up being two new, fun traditions. The first is based off an Italian American Catholic tradition. It’s called the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This year we teamed up with a close friend (Joseph’s oldest childhood friend, practically family). And, between the two couples, we prepared a wonderful feast for family and friends. Time will tell if we repeat on the same scale, but as for the Silly Couple, we expect to make a December seafood feast a tradition.

Additionally, Victoria tapped into Joseph’s Italian roots some more and for the first time we made homemade pizzelles. Thanks to a vintage pizzelle press obtained by the treasure hunter Victoria, we were able to successfully create a solid batch. The first couple didn’t exactly go smoothly, but once we got the hang of it, we created a good couple dozen to share with the family -and they were a hit!

Future Christmases on the Homestead

Of course, this year has us thinking a lot about the future on the homestead. One day, we would love to have our entire family come up and stay over for Christmas, but logistically this is likely never to occur. But, as we do bring on more animals next year to the homestead, we hope we can find a way to still spend time with friends while also getting to properly celebrate and appreciate the work we’ve done here on the homestead.

For those others in our shoes, we wonder…how do you handle big holidays? We’d love to find the balance and hope in the future years we come up with a great option.

To A Happy New Year

As we reflect on 2021, we have to be honest with ourselves. We fell short on a lot of our homesteading goals this year. Our vegetable garden was much smaller and less productive than we hoped. This was in part due to laziness and part due to just not accounting for the differences in north Florida. We didn’t buy or plant and fruit trees or bushes, and we were just all-around less organized than we should have been.

With that said, we are stoked for the new year. 2022 is going to be the year The Silly Couple takes the world by storm. Keep following us into the new year and see our journey in becoming millennial homesteaders. Along the way, we’ll share our successes, failures, and lessons learned. If you’re interested in being a part of that journey, make sure to subscribe and come back next week as we plan to start the year off strong.

Until then, we’ll see you around the homestead.
