About Us – Millennial Homesteaders

thesillycouple

Hello world! My name is Joseph, and this beautiful lady next to me is my wife, Victoria. We are so excited to welcome you to our blog, where we will share our adventures through life each and every step of the way.

Originally from St. Petersburg, FL, we took the opportunity in 2020 (yes, the year of COVID hell) to move out of the city and to a the small town of Bell, FL. With 5.5 acres at our disposal and a desire to build a more self-sufficient lifestyle, we’re here to share our successes, failures, and downright ridiculous moments.

As of 2022, we now have a livestock guardian dog, half a dozen chickens, and three Nigerian dwarf goats (a mom in milk and her two baby does). We also have bees in the mix that we are getting set up this year along with some new fruit trees and a full relaunch of our garden (you’ll find out some news on how we failed in 2021).

Why the Silly Couple?

When we were engaged to be married in late 2015, we wanted to find a way to encapsulate both our personalities into a single brand.

Our Vision as Millennial Homesteaders

Regardless of what people thought prior to 2020, it’s become difficult to deny just how fragile the world we live in is. We’ve always been fans of stocking up on canned goods, staples like rice, flour, etc., but if you want to be truly prepared and self-sufficient, homesteading is the way to go. To make things clear, we wouldn’t consider ourselves preppers -at least not in the sense others are.

Instead, our interested in self-sufficiency is focused around practical concerns. A good highlight of this can be found in our experience with egg-laying hens. When we started raising chickens, the cost of getting a dozen eggs from them was more expensive than the cost at the grocery store. Just six months later, that is no longer true. And, inflation is just one of the concerns.

With that said, we want to cover all the bases. This means growing vegetables, fruit, raising egg-laying hens, goats for milk, bees for honey, and more. And, with a composting operation, continual upcycling of those goods we do need to buy, and other efforts to reuse and recycle when possible, we believe we can make a positive impact not just in our own lives but in the world. If we can inspire others to join us and help build awareness about the joys of homesteading, then all the better!

More About Joseph

Joseph was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida. He’s always had a love for nature and the outdoors. For as long as he can remember, he’s longed for a simpler life away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Being self-sufficient and becoming a homesteader is in his DNA.

Beyond his love for the outdoors, Joseph is a huge fantasy nerd. In fact, he has his own fantasy universe Evorath. While he may be slow in releasing the books, this high fantasy world is something he has a deep passion for.

Professionally, he works as a data analyst, which he also has a passion for. Being a self-proclaimed scientist since he was a child, one of his biggest pet peeves is when people make claims about how “they say” or how people simply accept something because they saw a post on Facebook about it. Instead, he loves evidence-based science backed by actual data.

More About Victoria

Victoria’s family moved to St. Petersburg when she was just 2 years old, which makes her close enough to a Florida native. Lover of all things vintage and has a fault of romanticizing the past. she never entertained the idea of moving out of her Beloved city until Joseph came into the picture. The most natural progression for her old soul was to run back to her roots as a daughter of a country girl. It wasn’t until 2020, inspired by the show Dooms day preppers and the historic year she witnessed, she was fully convinced to move out of the city and get some land and become as self sufficient as possible.

She studied biology in college and had thoughts becoming a cardiologist or pathologist but decided she enjoys taking care of animals more. She considers herself a life long learner. She enjoys a good novel especially the classics or an old movie or time period drama. Most importantly she loves studying the bible with her favorite beverages God blesses our unworthy souls of…Coffee!

She is a strange creature that finds cleaning stress relieving. When she is not homesteading (snuggling animals) and homemaking (cleaning and baking) she is mostly likely crafting or running in nature. She never misses a leg day.
